IN HIS article entitled "A 'Royal' occasion" in the February 2002 Journal, Derek Childs described a visit to the Royal Albert Hall on the morning of 17th November 2001 as a unique experience. How right he was! It was also a unique opportunity for me to photograph those huge 32 foot Open Diapasons in Willis's 1871 case front. The gentleman who is having his photo taken shows the enormous scale of the pipes, the foot alone is some 6 feet tall. I wonder if he is an organ builder, as he looks as though he has fulfilled a lifelong ambition. The pipes under the "Willis" arch are the Pedal fluework.
